DPMM FC into Pepsi Cup final

By K. Jafni H. Ali

DPMM FC bagged another miraculous win last night when they snatched a 2 - 1 victory in extra time against Kota Rangers in the Pepsi Cup semifinals. The match took place at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

Both sides showed their resolution and determination to win the game, as the winners will get to face Kasuka FC in the final on August 14.

Kota Rangers especially were in a competitive mood, attacking as soon as the game started, and rattling the bar with their very first shot at goal through their all out striker, Mohd Rosanan Abdullah Samak.

In the 25th minute, DPMM FC's Liew Chuan Fue missed the best chance to put his team ahead when the ball was played to him while he was lying unmarked deep inside the opponent's box. Unfortunately, he squandered the chance as the ball went between his legs when he had just the Kota Rangers keeper to beat.

Ali Momin of DPMM FC continued to be the master in the midfield department as he controlled the tempo of his game.

But the Kota Rangers keeper was the man of the match as he made several great saves to preserve the score at 0 - 0 at half time.

After the breather, DPMM FC looked fresh after some pep talk by their West Slovenian coach, Sandi Seydinovski as they began to show their quality, winning most of the first ball, which were then converted into attack.

It was Kota Rangers, however, in the 65th minute who got the first goal when a Mohd Rosanan freekick from the left found Saiful Aznee unmarked at the near post. Saiful's diving header went beyond the reach of DPMM FC keeper, the ex-national Ibrahim Bakar.

DPMM FC responded with the equaliser ten minutes later courtesy of a strike by the unmarked Hj Hassan at the far post after a low cross by his teammate from the right, which misses everybody except him.

It was a nervous last ten minutes of normal game as both teams tried to score but when the whistle blew, the score was still 1 - 1 and the game had to be brought into an extra time golden goal situation.

DPMM FC continued to pressure attack on Kota Rangers in the over time and they got the winning goal that sent them to the final carved out by an Ali Momin pass through the centre, which found the national player Radiman Rahman. He shot with his left foot and hit the right post only for the ball to go in on a rebound for a 2 -1 win.

The DPMM coach said " It was a very hard game playing against Kota Rangers as we had injuries to our players and are in the preparation for the Visit Brunei Year (VBY) 2001 Cup, which we had to cope with our import players.

"We won because I think we are a much better prepared and could won much more than our opponent."

It is the second time that DPMM FC was stretched into extra time, the first was against AH United in the quarterfinals, which they won 3 - 2 on a penalty shootout.
