Cricket - Sarawak dethrone Brunei

Sarawak waited for 30 years and finally lifted the prestigious Borneo Cup yesterday when they dethroned defending champions Brunei by 26 runs in a thrilling cricket final at Jerudong Park Polo Club.

Sarawak batted first and began in a cavalier fashion with their openers Gordon (48) and Rakesh (28) compiling 57 runs for the first wicket.

Captain Viajayalingam (25) continued his openers good work in the middle order to take Sarawak's total to 170 runs all out off 50 overs.

Brunei bowlers shared the wickets with Justin (10-2-26-2), Alistar (7-2-28-2), A J Cliffe (10-0-34-1) and Manzur (5-0-24-1).

Brunei began their run chase in a uncharacteristic fashion losing 2 wickets for 25 runs off 11 overs. Sam (42) and Renato (28) looked as if they were steering Brunei to victory with a 3rd wicket partnership of 55 runs.

However, Sarawak fought back and forced Brunei's middle order batting collapse with tight bowling and enthusiastic fielding. Brunei feel short of Sarawak's total by 26 runs compiling 144 runs all out off 46 overs.

The successful bowlers for Sarawak were Rakesh (10-1-26-3), Vijay (8-0-27-2), Gordon (8-0-35-2) Suresh (10-3-21-1) and Peter (10-1-26-1).

Pg Yaaqub b Pg Hj Othman the CEO of Jerudong Park Properties gave away the prizes to the two teams.
