M-Cup - Suharmin nets a brace as Sabah fight back for victory

JOHOR BARU: Former international Suharmin Yusof struck twice when it mattered most to keep Sabah in the race in Group D with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Malaysia Cup debutants Kedah JKR at Kota Kinabalu's Penampang Stadium yesterday.

The late afternoon match also saw both teams see red with a player from each side — Sabah's Shahril Arsat and JKR skipper Farook Ismail — sent off within three minutes in the second-half.

Shahril was the first to take an early shower when he was given the marching orders in the 50th minute after a clash with Farook. Two minutes later it was Farook's turn for two yellow card offences.

Referee Mohd Shukri Mat Amin of Terengganu booked the former Kedah and Perlis player for time wasting. Farook protested vehemently and the referee did not hesitate to give him a second yellow and the sack, leaving both teams balanced in numbers on the field.

In the end, Sabah prevailed with Suharmin hitting a brace from corner kicks taken by Henry Soimpon in the 58th and 88th minutes to throw a lifeline to the Rhinos.

For Sabah coach Ken Worden it was a big relief when the final whistle was blown. It is a match he would want to forget fast. It was a match Sabah controlled throughout but yet the Rhinos were made to struggle all the way.

“We were one down and then had a man sent off. We were attacking all the way. It was one-way traffic and all in all we had 31 shots on target but scored only two,” said Worden.

Sabah started off aggressively but it was JKR who took a surprise lead in the 30th minute when Sabah goalkeeper Khairul Azman Mohamed brought down JKR striker Zulkifly Salleh inside the box. Farook made no mistake from the spot.

Then came the sackings. But it was also the start of the Henry-Suharmin combination that was to bring Sabah full points.
