M-Cup - Club side stun Sarawak with 4-0 win

By ERIC SAMUEL

SEREMBAN: Club side NS Chempaka pulled off the biggest upset of the Malaysia Cup yesterday when they stunned Premier I side Sarawak with a convincing 4-0 win in a Group B match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi last night.

The Premier II club side from Negri Sembilan bounced back to pick up their first win after having gone down 1-2 to Pahang in their opening game in Kuantan on Tuesday.

Their goals came from R. Mani Varman in the 42nd minute, a brace from skipper V. Thinagaran (44th, 55th) and K. Nanthakumar (84th).

Sarawak, meanwhile, were a pale shadow of themselves and nothing went right for the FA Cup finalists, who simply had no answer to the hard-running football of the Chempaka side coached by former international G. Torairaju.

It was a blow to Jalil Ramli, who had just returned from a stint in Europe. He had injected some Liverpool-style tactics in their convincing 2-0 win over Kelantan in Kuching on Tuesday.

But yesterday, it was a rude awakening for the East Malaysian side, who found it hard to cope with Chempaka's three-pronged attack led by R. Sekar, R. Mani Varman and R. Balan.

Sarawak hardly threatened Chempaka goalkeeper S. Ragesh while Sarawak custodian Mazlan Wahid was a busy man.

Chempaka’s tireless efforts paid dividends when Mani Varman opened the scoring by stabbing in a low cross from Mohamed Ayob in the 42nd minute.

Barely two minutes later, Chempaka increased the lead off a penalty taken by V. Thinagaran after Sarawak's Jeffery Untam held R. Sekar's jersey inside the box.

Chempaka continued with their gnashing form when Thinagaran pierced the Sarawak defence with a powerful free-kick from outside the box in the 55th minute.

Mazlan was beaten all the way. In a desperate move, Sarawak replaced their skipper Mohamed Ali Sapiee with Bobby Pian.

It did not help. Instead, it was Chempaka substitute K. Nanthakumar who made it 4-0 by tapping in a cross from Sekar inside the box.

NS Chempaka: S. Ragesh, L. Suresh, V. Thinagaran, Dominic Minsi, P. Saravanan, R. Sekar, Saifullizan Hashim, Mohamed Ayob Alias (Julaidi Jalumin), R. Balan (K. Nanthakumar), R. Mani Varman (Azmi Mohamed), P. Sivanantham.

Sarawak: Mazlan Wahid, Ramos Sari, Jeffery Akup (Irwandy Jempaka), Ramles Sari, Mohamed Ali Sapiee (Bobby Pian), Dahlan Matussin, Halim Jantan, Zaidel Sakup, Ibrahim Mentali, Gilbert Cassidy Gawing (G. Muthu), Jeffery Untam.
