'Loagan Bunut in S'wak poised to become famous resort'

KUCHING - Loagan Bunut National Park, the largest natural lake in Sarawak, located 120 km from Miri town, has the potential to become a well-known holiday resort in the state, said Tourism Minister Dato Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.

"It also has the potential of becoming a recreational centre including for water sports such as canoeing and swimming as well as angling," he told Bernama.

He said the natural beauty of the national park with its greenery and mangrove swamps was also suitable for jungle trekking and a place to watch various types of wild life there.

"The variety of fauna and flora provides a potential for Loagan Bunut to become a famous science research centre in the country," he said.

In addition, Abang Johari said the national park could be developed into a cultural village because of its close proximity to the Iban, Penan and Berawan longhouses.

Abang Johari also said that the people in the villages around the area should preserve their traditional culture especially the dances which was a tourist attraction and had commercial value.

He said every visitor to Loagan Bunut which had a wide variety of freshwater fish would certainly enjoy the fish dishes which had become a major attraction.

"The climate which is not too hot and cool makes the national park an ideal resting place for the busy city folks," he said.

Loagan Bunut, which was at one time unknown to the people of Sarawak, has become more popular since it was gazetted as Laogan Bunut National Park on Aug 29, 1991.

The journey from Miri to the 10.736-hectare national park takes about two hours by road.
