Joy of Gawai Dayak for everyone to share

SARATOK – The Gawai celebration is being declared as National Public holiday as recognition to the Dayak community’s contribution to the prosperity and harmony of the country, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Alfred Jabu.“That is why we cannot take peace for granted because in Malaysia we are willing to sacrifice to ensure peace and it is in fact our greatest investment for the younger generation,” he said.

Speaking at the Betong Division Gawai Dayak dinner here on Saturday, Jabu stressed that unity should cut across the racial and religious barriers, Jabu, said this year’s national level Gawai Dayak celebration would be held in Miri on June 12. “But we have to check how long we should celebrate Gawai to the fullest because the Ngiling Tikai ceremony will symbolically lower the curtains on the festival. “If we overused our Tikai (mat) this year, then we will end up having problem to celebrate the following year because it is already worn out,” he jested, meaningfully.

Gawai tradition, he said, should be preserved at all costs without neglecting the importance of knowledge and pursuant of latest technology in order for the com munity to stay relevant and keeping abreast with the global events.“We have to continue with our tradition it has to be taken seriously but not at the expense of the young ones’ education,” he added.Jabu assured that the government was going full ahead to improve the living standard of the interior community via the introduction of smart-partnership between the rural poor and big corporations.“To date, we have paid out a total of RM131 million to SALCRA land development project as dividends to the scheme participants,” he revealed. Also present were Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Peter Nyarok, Saratok MP Jelaing Mersat, Kalaka State Assemblyman Wahab Abdul Aziz, former Deputy National Unity Minister Datuk Peter Tinggom Kamarau.
