Sarawak Trail to boost eco-tourism

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council plans to introduce an eco-tourism trail to promote tourism, council chairman Lawrence Th’ng said.

He said the proposed trail would pass through the Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, the Bidayuh longhouse in Annah Rais, Borneo Highland Resort and a new pitcher plant and orchid garden, which will open next month.

He said the trail would showcase tourist attractions within Padawan, which covers the suburban and rural areas of Kuching district.

“We believe there is plenty of tourism potential in Padawan.

“For example, we have Semenggoh where tourists can see orang utan and visit Annah Rais, the best example of a living longhouse in Padawan.

“We also have the Borneo Highland Resort for golfing tourists,” he said.

Th’ng was speaking at the launch of the Kubah Serapi International Run’s website at the council office yesterday.

The run, organised by the council in conjunction with the Padawan Fest, will be held on Aug 15.

Meanwhile, State Tourism Minister Datuk Abang Johari Abang Tun Openg, who launched the website, said his ministry would help the council to develop its tourism products which in turn would generate economic activities for the local community.

He also proposed that the council come up with a brand name to market its tourist attractions.

“The brand name should be synonymous with the tourism assets that Padawan has.

“So the moment you mention it, people will know it refers to Padawan,” he said.
