Sabah culture potential global attraction

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian culture, particularly that of Sabah if properly showcased will surely catch the eyes of the world.

Hence, the perception that only the Western culture deserves a global recognition or is superior to ours does not make any sense, said Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism secretary-general Datuk Tengku Alaudin Tengku Abdul Majid yesterday.

Speaking at the launching of the Sarimah Adzrina label fashion design at the Mid Valley Mega Mall here yesterday, Tengku Alaudin said: "If Malaysians study closely the people of the West possess and what we Malaysians inherit from our forefathers, ours is far richer."

"It is the packaging that has made a difference for them. Our culture, if packaged properly will surely catch the eyes of the world," he reiterated.

He reminded that all people in this world are born equal no matter who you are and where you are from.

"No one is inferior or superior to the other," he said while commending the hardwork of Datin Sarimah Adzrina Tengku Datuk Dr Zainal Adlin, the proprietor of Zas Collections boutique at the mall.

He said the products of the designer carries the shapes and colours of Sabah and motivated by the latest trend in fashion to suit the modern world.

"The Sabah elements are being incorporated into modern dresses," he said adding that the creation is worth the support from everyone.

During the afternoon function, the guest of honour together with visitors were entertained to a fashion show by top local fashion models parading the debut collection of Sarimah called "Busana Sabah Malaysian Borneo I."

This collection, though based on the traditional styles, shapes and colours of Sabah, presents an utterly modern silhouette with the use of Thai silk, French lace, songket, Sabah traditional beads and the traditionally woven fabric of Sabah.

The label Sarimah Adzrina advocates the functionality and practicality of traditional heritage with the modern world.

Also present was Sabah Tourism Promotion Corporation (STPC) chairman Tengku Datuk Dr Zainal Adlin, who is also the husband of Sarimah.
