Political lesson in Simunjan

KUCHING: A lesson is shaping up in Simunjan. The question is who will be doing the teaching.
Former deputy education minister Datuk Bujang Ulis from Keadilan is taking on his former student, Noroden Majais, the PBB incumbent.

Out in the political wilderness since he parted ways with PBB president Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud more than 10 years ago, Bujang, 52, is using Keadilan to make a comeback.

"I am the underdog. I want this fight to be seen as a student going against his teacher," he quipped.

With an axe to grind after PBB refused his re-entry into the party, Bujang is using "correcting injustices" as his battle cry.

"This is my main campaign theme and Keadilan fitted in very well," he said in Simunjan.

Bujang, who is in a three-cornered tussle with Noroden and independent Muhammad Hussain Mustapha, however, played down his chances although he had represented this home constituency of his at one time.

"I am banking on how well the people know me and how much trust they have in me to represent them (again)," he added.

He claimed the constituents were dissatisfied over the development of a 800ha oil palm plantation, adding that the people were never consulted.

But the PBB camp countered his claim by accusing Bujang of being unhappy because he wanted the project for himself.

Noroden dismissed the claim, saying the people were consulted and about 3,000 of them have direct interests in the project through a land ownership scheme launched 10 days ago.

Asked to comment on his battle with his former teacher, he said: "I don’t believe in character assassination, especially against my teacher who taught me when I was in Form Three."

In reality, the seat will see a straight fight between the teacher and his student as the independent candidate, who is believed to from the Datuk Abang Abu Bakar Mustapha group of candidates, is not expected to make any impact in the seat which has 57% Malays, 37% Ibans and 6% Chinese.

"It is a question of how well you can tackle the Ibans who could decide the outcome," an observer said.
