Kalimantan has an estimated population of about 12.2 million people (1990 estimates - 9.1 million; 3.3% average annual growth rate).  Around 35.0 percent of its populace are residing in West Kalimantan, follows by South Kalimantan (28.0%), East Kalimantan (21.0%), and the rest in Central Kalimantan.  Most of the Dayaks concentrate at the hinterland, whereas the rest such as the Malays and Chinese are mostly located at the coastal and urban areas.
