BQL school encourages domestic tourism

By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Some 30 students undergoing LCCI courses of Accounts and Business Studies from Brainwise Quantum Learning (BQL) School in Gadong will embark on a local field trip to Temburong on March 27 - a move towards promoting the Homestay Programme as well as the Student Tourism Programme to encourage domestic tourism.

The leader of the delegation, their teacher Ms Clarita Alfonte, regarded the trip as part of a learning process outside the classroom.

She said the students, accompanied by five teachers, will be exposed to a variety of sporting activities such as rafting, canoeing, rope walking and tug-of-war.

The outdoor activities, she said, are designed to develop the students so they would be fit physically and mentally.

"It will be filled with physical endurance tests, enthusiasm development tests and sports."

The move by BQL School should be an inspiration to local tour operators - to focus on domestic tourism as one of the measures to take in midst of the United States-led war on Iraq and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak, observers said.

They said if the domestic tourism sector is strong and resilient, Brunei Darussalam will be able to counter the impact of the SARS outbreak and the Iraq war now affecting the influx of tourists from West and East Asia.

They said Brunei Darussalam could be affected in terms of tourism revenue if the war and the SARS breakout prolonged.

"By providing a homestay programme, it will generate business for two-star resorts and below and other small operators.

"Domestic tourism also plays an important role in the national economy but we need to find ways to improve its performance," they said.
