Boost for Kota Belud tourism

Kota Belud, Sabah: Several new tourism products will be launched in the district next year, aimed at further exposing the rich cultures and traditions of the local people.

According to Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Mohd Salleh Tun Said, these would include the introduction of a Kota Belud website to provide a wider coverage of information on the district and the people of various ethnic groups, particularly the Bajaus.

Also in the pipeline is a much broader prospect of accommodation through the home-stay concept to enable foreign and local tourists to sample the traditional or cultural lifestyle of the people here.

He said this while officiating at the opening of the exhibition area of the various government departments, agencies and the private sector in conjunction with the three-day annual Tamu Besar at the town padang here Saturday.

Salleh, who is also Kota Belud MP and Usukan Assemblyman, expressed optimism that the visitors would continue to impress with the uniqueness of the Bajau culture, especially the skills on horseback by the now popular "Bajau Cowboys of the East", in addition to the clean and beautiful hilly environment.

In order to allow visitors more time to sample and enjoy these unique attractions, among others, the organising committee had decided to make the annual Tamu Besar a three-day event, beginning this year.

The three-day event showcases the various aspects of Bajau and native cultural traditions and handicraft, as well as agricultural produce of the local farming community.
