World Cup Football - Brunei go down fighting

SAN'A (Yemen) (AP) - Abdul Salam Hamoud Chaleb scored the only goal of the match as Yemen defeated Brunei 1-0 Friday in an Asian Group 8 World Cup qualifier at the Ali Muhsin Mureisi stadium and moved to the top of the group's standing.

Yemen dominated much of the game but failed to score in the first half, largely due to excellent saves by goalkeeper Mohammed Wardun Yussof, who, after struggling with an injured leg, was substituted in the 68th minute by Ibrahim Abu Bakar.

Yemen had control of the ball and carried out 18 corner kicks, compared to Brunei's two, but their attacks were rarely organised and their play was generally haphazard.

The only goal came in the 79th minute when Sharaf Mahfood Sharaf sent a pass to Chaleb, who, although marked by three Brunei players, headed the ball into the upper right corner.

Yemen now leads the group with seven points from three matches, one point ahead of the United Arab Emirates, who has six points from three matches. India is in third place with four points.

The top team in each of the 10 Asian groups advances to the final qualifying round. Two or three teams from Asia will qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan. South Korea and Japan qualify as hosts.
