Football - Brunei soccer teams unveiled

Brunei football squads for both the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Malaysia League Premier Two were announced yesterday with a few surprises at both ends.

For starters, Abang Norsillmy Abang Hj Taha, who has been an influential member of the Malaysian League squad over the last two seasons has been included in the World Cup squad as opposed to Mick Jones' M-League side.

Only one player appears in both squads and that is the young goalkeeper Mohammad Wardun Yussof who Jones has allowed to play in the World Cup side to gain some exposure.

Both Alizanda Sitom and Jefry Mohammad look set to remain the first and second choice goalies in the M-League side.

Under their coach Zainuddin Hj Kassim, the World Cup side looks like a makeshift squad thrown together in the space of a few days and the majority of players will be relative unknowns to the Brunei public.

The familiar faces in that squad are Suni Mat Jerah, Rosanan Samak, Ali Momin, Ibrahim Abu Bakar and Ali Hassan Hj Liman.

As for the rest of the players, it's going to be an interesting tournament and Zainuddin will definitely have his hands full with the players at his disposal.

The M-League side has definitely more of a feel of familiarity with the exception of the seven new Kasuka FC players that coach Mick Jones has drafted in this year.

A few seasons ago, the Mohammad brothers of Irwan, Moksen, Jefry created history by being selected to the same Brunei team in the Malaysian League.

Now the trio has been joined by yet another brother Sufri Mohammad whose outstanding leadership in the midfield for Kasuka caught the attention of Jones in recent tournaments.

Moksen, who retired from the national team two seasons ago, has replaced Dayem Hj Ali as assistant coach this season after his coaching stint at Kasuka drew rave reviews from all local football authorities.

Ak Sallehuddin Pg Hj Damit remains the skipper of the side after being given the captain's armband last season and looks to lead a very young side in the race for promotion to Premier One.

The World Cup side are in action first this Saturday against Yemen at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium while the Malaysian League side have their first outing on Monday April 9 away to the Armed Forces in Kuala Lumpur.

The full squads are as follows:-
