A clear message for opposition parties

KUCHING: The voters have spoken and the message is loud and clear - leave Sarawak politics to Sarawakians.

The results lend credence to an earlier call by a PBB leader asking peninsula-based Parti Keadilan Nasional and PAS "to pack their bags and go home."

What happened on Thursday was an anti-climax after predictions that the opposition would pick up a handful of seats.

Even the seat won by DAP in Kidurong involved a close fight as it was won by a majority of only 143 votes. DAP lost in the other 12 seats it contested and its sole victory was definitely not convincing.

The writing is on the wall that the brash and aggressive campaign tactics used by Keadilan and PAS have no place in Sarawak politics.

Keadilan lost in all 25 seats it contested and managed to gain only 37,171 or 6.92% of the votes.

It is obvious that Sarawakians are not used to Keadilan’s aggressive style and prefer a gentler approach.

"It may have had a small impact in certain Malay majority areas but it will be some time before it can make a breakthrough, if it ever does," an observer said.

He said its encouraging showing in the 1999 parliamentary election was only because of the Anwar Ibrahim factor.

The challenge by a group of independents under the ABU flag was also rejected outright.

All its 42 candidates were beaten soundly, including former defence minister Datuk Abang Abu Bakar Mustapha who was convincingly beaten by a PBB candidate.

If any conclusion is to be drawn, attempts, if any, to drive a wedge between politically-dominant Malays and Melanaus did not work.

As for PAS, it suffered a total eclipse, with its three candidates obtaining a total of only 2,854 or 0.53% of the votes. To add insult to injury, its Sarawak commissioner Shokri Mohd Fauzi lost his deposit in Samariang.

Sarawak’s Malay and Melanau communities have sent a clear signal - there is no need for any Malay-based opposition parties to meddle in their politics.

In the case of DAP, it may have to go back to the drawing board to examine its Malaysian Malaysia concept.
