Abang Abu Bakar to contest in Asajaya

KUCHING: Former defence minister Datuk Abang Abu Bakar Mustapha will stand in the Asajaya seat that was held by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for the last 20 years.

Abang Abu Bakar, who had earlier challenged Taib to do battle with him in this constituency, is going ahead although the chief minister has decided to contest in the Balingian seat in central Sarawak.

"Itís confirmed that our assault on this Malay-majority seat is our most important battleground in this election," an aide of Abang Abu Bakar said yesterday.

Abang Abu Bakar is leading a group of 48 independents who claim that they are not anti-Barisan Nasional and are only opposed to the state leadership.

The Umno leadership has repeatedly denied backing this group but Abang Abu Bakar has been quick to point out that they will all join Umno only if they formed the next government in the 62-seat assembly.

The aide said they would not release the official list of candidates before nomination day. He gave no reasons but it is understood that the group feared crossovers.

He said Abang Abu Bakar would make an important announcement immediately after nomination but did not give any indication as to what to expect.

The group is expected to associate itself with Umno indirectly by declaring to champion the cause of local Malays which it claims were being marginalised.

Among possible candidates is Alau Tayan, whose wife is the niece of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, in Machan.

Alau will face Assistant Minister for Rural and Land Development Datuk Gramong Juna who is Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu Youth chief.
