Telang Usan rep wants to stand as BN candidate

KUCHING: Incumbent Telang Usan state assemblyman Kebing Wan will recontest as a Barisan Nasional candidate if his application to be a PBB member is accepted, he said.

The Chief Minister’s former political secretary, who is defending his 75% Orang Ulu seat of 12,591 voters, said it was no secret he wanted to be a Barisan candidate.

Kebing, 56, said some Barisan members recently approached him but there was nothing in black and white.

Kebing, who quit PBB to stand as an independent in the 1996 state elections, said he wrote to PBB chief Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in 1998 that he wanted to join the Barisan and repeated the request during a State Assembly sitting.

A senior PBB official said they were not likely to accept Kebing because the party was strict on members who quit to contest independently.

Sarawak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohammed Yusoff Jaafar said approval for ceramah could be done within three days instead of 14 due to the short campaigning period.
