No place for extremism (Sarawak)

By Anthony Joseph

MIRI: Reject political or religious extremists. They have no place in Sarawak.

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan Hong Nam, who made this call yesterday, said the people would not accept any form of extremism.

"These people don't care about life or other people and they just care about themselves. These are dangerous people. Make sure that that they don't come to Sarawak," he said after launching an Information Communciations Technology Camp at the Civic Centre.

On the call by opposition parties not to touch on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington during the election campaign, the Deputy Chief Minister questioned their rationale.

"The incidents and terrorism not only affect the people in USA but the people here as well as they are now afraid. The bomb hoax at the Kuching International Airport on Tuesday is one incident which affects the people here too," he said.

Chan said the oppositions nonchalant attitude clearly showed their insensitivity towards events happening around the world.

"We must make sure that our people are able to live peacefully and that they treasure this peace.

Sarawakians want security and peace and we don't want war," he added. Stressing that peace and stability were very important to Malaysia, Chan said the people did not want any form of extremism in the country, be it political or religious.

On the opposition foray into the election, Chan said their intention was obviously not to form a government.

He said the opposition had difficulty even finding candidates to stand in certain constituencies.
