Osama Laden in Sabah? (Sabah)

By Wati Andi Samsiar

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Chong Kah Kiat yesterday assured that Osama bin Laden, a prime suspect in the terror attacks in the United States of America, would not be able to slip into Sabah.

However, Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said that Malaysia was not taking lightly, reports from Manila, that the Saudi-born fugitive, could have quietly fled Afghanistan, his last known hideout, to the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.

Osama is a prime suspect in the devastating attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on Tuesday, which has left thousands missing, most feared dead.

Kah Kiat said that there is no cause for worry among the people on the possibility of Osama, slipping into the state.

He said security control along the vast sea boundary, as well as within Sabah, are tight and security personnel are in place.

"So there is nothing to fear," he said when asked to comment on the claim by the Philippines Senate’s Vice Chairman Rodolfo Biazon that Osama might slip into Mindanao seeking refuge.

To a question on whether he has been advised and briefed by the military on the possibility of Osama going into the state, Kah Kiat said no one advised him on the matter.

"No..no one advised me on that matter and this is all news coming in from the Philippines," the chief minister said, again stressing there is nothing to fear.

"As far as we are concerned, we have very adequate security control in the State, both along the borders and within the state and our security personnel both from the military and police force are in place," Kah Kiat said.

Meanwhile Shafie said that Malaysia had gone on high alert as the global hunt for the associates of the terrorists in the US extended to this part of the world.

"Security measures have been stepped up in key public places such as the airports and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre," he said.

Shafie said that was no indication as yet that Osama had entered any country neighbouring Malaysia, and though the Manila reports appeared mere speculation, nevertheless, Malaysia would remain cautious.

It was reported by Bernama on Friday that Saudi dissident Osama Bin Laden, the prime suspect in Tuesday’s attacks in the US, may try to slip into Mindanao.

Biazon had said that Osama had long established ties with the Moro secessionist groups in Mindanao by extending them arms and funds.

Biazon, a former armed forces chief also said Osama might be forced to flee Afghanistan amid US pressure and escape to Mindanao and hide with the secessionist.
