Chan appeals for world peace (Sarawak)

KUCHING: Sarawak United People's Party president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan Hong Nam has appealed to the world community to be united to uphold and protect world peace and to fight terrorism.

Chan, who is a Deputy Chief Minister, said he was shocked and grieved by the ruthless terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the United States of America on Tuesday.

He could not believe that a tragedy of this proportion could happen within one of the strongest countries in the world.

"All forms of terrorism must be condemned in the strongest terms.

This is because we must respect the sanctity of human life and avoid inflicting sufferings on innocent people," said Chan. "The terrorists, however, have no conscience and regard for lives and property."

Chan said he understood the grief of the American people and he conveyed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of those who had lost their loved ones and friends in the attack.

Stressing that terrorism and acts of terrorism must be stopped, he said the world must uphold and protect international community, peace and order. Chan agreed that after thorough investigations had been carried out, the terrorists must be brought to justice.

"However, I hope the United States government, in taking retaliatory actions against terrorists, would do so within international laws so that innocent lives would be spared."

Chan hoped that from this inci-dent, Malaysians could see the im-portance of peace and stability.
"Our people must now wake up and be united. We must work together to fight against all forms of extremism and violence," he said.

"Only in this way can we preserve our peace and harmony. This pro-tection can only be guaranteed and provided by the people themselves."
