Football - Yemen won't take Brunei lightly

As the Yemen football team rolled into town ahead of their World Cup qualifying match against Brunei tomorrow night, one thing became very obvious. Both teams know very little about each other, making the Group Eight clash very intriguing indeed.

Both coaches were of the same view that the other two teams in Group Eight, UAE and India are definitely the teams to watch and aside from that, anything could happen on Saturday night.

The Yemen coach Ahmad Luciano, a Brazilian Muslim, gave very little away in terms of his own team's strengths and weaknesses when contacted by the Borneo Bulletin yesterday but did admit to being wary of the threat of the underdog.

"As we know very little of Brunei, I am wary that they could pull a surprise against us," said Luciano.

His Brunei counterpart Zainuddin Hj Kassim was less than willing to predict any sort of scoreline for tomorrow night's match but has stressed that his makeshift squad would give it their all despite their short preparation.

Said Zainuddin, "To have seven days preparation is hardly ideal and to make matters worse, we know absolutely nothing about Yemen. But we will give it our best and hope for the best."

"We have some experienced players and I am hoping that these seasoned players can help to calm the youngsters in the squad."

Luciano added that apart from watching a video of the team in action in the Malaysian Premier League, he knows very little of the manager and players. He stressed that he has warned his players not to take Brunei' players lightly.

"At this level, you cannot discount Brunei that easily even though in theory the Emirates and India are much stronger," noted the Yemen coach.

Besides, he would probably have been informed by now that the team he watched in the video will not be the team that takes to the field tomorrow night as BAFA has adopted the policy of using two entirely separate teams for both the World Cup qualifiers and the Malaysian League.

Luciano also made a passing reference to the match between Brazil and Ecuador where Brazil lost 1-0 and suggested that if the Brunei players work hard they can achieve anything.

When pressed on who his key players are, Luciano not surprisingly, refused to be drawn into the question and made only general comments about his team and only said he has a very good goal keeper.

It has been an open secret Brunei will field a different squad for the match as it has been made clear that promotion to Premier One is the priority for this year.

Football - Sabah ordered to settle Worden's pay

PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia's (FAM) Players Status Committee (PSC) have ordered the Sabah FA (SFA) to pay up the salaries due to their coach, Ken Worden, by Monday.

The PSC's chairman, Tan Sri Zain Hashim, said yesterday that they had also directed Sabah to fax them a receipt of acknowledgment of payment made to the Australian.

"They (SFA) have only paid Worden's salary up till December 2000.

"They have to settle the three months' salary owing to him,'' said Tan Sri Zain after a three-hour meeting at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya.

However, the PSC were unable to look into Worden's claim of not being paid a signing-on fee, which he said was promised to him when he joined the team in the mid-season last year.

Tan Sri Zain said that there was no proof of record and there was also SFA had also not minuted in the council meeeting anything on the matter.

"We have loked at his (Worden's) contract with the Sabah FA and nothing is mentioned about a signing-on fee,'' said Tan Sri Zain.

M-League - Sarawak top premier division

KOTA KINABALU - Sarawak romped home to a 3-0 win over Perlis at the Sarawak Stadium for their second consecutive victory in the Premier One football league on Tuesday.

After impressive home wins, Pahang and Terengganu secured points away from home with drawn matches; Pahang and Selangor played to a two-all draw while Terengganu and Kelantan tie ended up in a similar situation.

And after tasting defeats in their opener, Negeri Sembilan beat Johor 2-0 while Perak beat Melaka 3-1. Visitors Penang scored a 1-0 win over Kuala Lumpur at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.

In Kuching, Sarawak went ahead through national player Bobby Pian in the 5th minute who scored from close range after receiving a pass from skipper Mohd Ali Sapiee.

In the second half, Sarawak stretched their lead through striker Halim Jantan in the 51st minute off a corner taken by Ramos Sari. Halim scored his second goal of the night and Sarawak's third in the 69th minute off a cross by Gilbert Cassidy Gawing.

In Seremban, Negeri Sembilan missed two early opportunities when Mohamed Shukor Adan's shot in the ninth minute hit the post instead and Nor Isham Ismail heading just wide in the 24th minute.

But Zami Mohamed Noor headed Negeri Sembilan into the lead a minute before halftime.

The home team got their second goal through Nor Isham in the 69th minute.

At the KLFA Stadium, Kuala Lumpur went down to their second defeat, after losing 0-1 to Perlis on Saturday. A heavy pitch following a downpour earlier slowed down the game.

Mohamed Noor Derus came close for the visitors in the 20th minute but a minute later Moey Kok Hong scored the only goal of the match when he headed home a corner taken by Ng Kok Heng.

In Ipoh, the home team's goals came in the 13th minute through a penalty by Norizam Ali Hassan, in the 58th through P. Gunasekaran and in the 73rd minute through Liew Kit Kong.

Melaka replied through Mohamed Faizal Esahar in the 61st minute. Perak, playing without stalwarts -- Azrul Amri Burhan, V. Saravanan and Khalid Jamlus -- held the upper hand.

They were awarded the penalty when K. Nanthakumar was felled by Melaka goalkeeper Ariffin Yunus in the penalty box.

In Kota Baharu, in an east coast derby, at the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium finished in a 2-2 draw.

The visitors took the lead in the first minute through Rosdi Talib.

Kelantan found the equaliser through Mohamed Azman Yusoff in the 26th minute. In the second half, Anuar Abu Bakar got Kelantan's second goal when he headed home a rebound in the 64th minute.

Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail put Terengganu back on even terms in the 80th minute when his header beat goalkeeper Mohamed Shahrizan Ismail.

At the Shah Alam Stadium, defender B. Rajinikandh came to Selangor's rescue in his team's 2-2 against Pahang.

Rajinikandh scored both of Selangor's goals -- in the 19th minute (a penalty) and in the 78th minute.

Pahang, parading a youthful team, showed they were made of sterner stuff and got their rewards through Azmani Kadir in the 45th minute and Shahruddin Rosdi in the 65th minute.

In a Premier II match, which was postponed from the previous night, Kedah and JKR Kelantan drew 1-1 at the Darulaman Stadium.

JKR Kelantan, which had taken a 1-0 lead when play was abandoned Monday night, took a similar lead in the 45th minute yesterday through a goal scored by Zool Ihsan.

But in the 47th minute, Kedaha managed to equalise through Mohd Fakhzan Salleh.

Football - Brunei soccer teams unveiled

Brunei football squads for both the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Malaysia League Premier Two were announced yesterday with a few surprises at both ends.

For starters, Abang Norsillmy Abang Hj Taha, who has been an influential member of the Malaysian League squad over the last two seasons has been included in the World Cup squad as opposed to Mick Jones' M-League side.

Only one player appears in both squads and that is the young goalkeeper Mohammad Wardun Yussof who Jones has allowed to play in the World Cup side to gain some exposure.

Both Alizanda Sitom and Jefry Mohammad look set to remain the first and second choice goalies in the M-League side.

Under their coach Zainuddin Hj Kassim, the World Cup side looks like a makeshift squad thrown together in the space of a few days and the majority of players will be relative unknowns to the Brunei public.

The familiar faces in that squad are Suni Mat Jerah, Rosanan Samak, Ali Momin, Ibrahim Abu Bakar and Ali Hassan Hj Liman.

As for the rest of the players, it's going to be an interesting tournament and Zainuddin will definitely have his hands full with the players at his disposal.

The M-League side has definitely more of a feel of familiarity with the exception of the seven new Kasuka FC players that coach Mick Jones has drafted in this year.

A few seasons ago, the Mohammad brothers of Irwan, Moksen, Jefry created history by being selected to the same Brunei team in the Malaysian League.

Now the trio has been joined by yet another brother Sufri Mohammad whose outstanding leadership in the midfield for Kasuka caught the attention of Jones in recent tournaments.

Moksen, who retired from the national team two seasons ago, has replaced Dayem Hj Ali as assistant coach this season after his coaching stint at Kasuka drew rave reviews from all local football authorities.

Ak Sallehuddin Pg Hj Damit remains the skipper of the side after being given the captain's armband last season and looks to lead a very young side in the race for promotion to Premier One.

The World Cup side are in action first this Saturday against Yemen at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium while the Malaysian League side have their first outing on Monday April 9 away to the Armed Forces in Kuala Lumpur.

The full squads are as follows:-

M-League - Brunei take on soldiers

Brunei's Malaysian League side will be playing their first Premier Two match on Monday April 9 away to the Armed Forces after the rest of the league will have had a two-game head start.

Bowling - Brunei kegler stopped at quarters

KOTA KINABALU - Brunei's Awangku Eshamuddin Pengiran Mohiddin played well on the opening day to qualify for the quarterfinals of the CGU Malaysia Masters Cup at Pyramid Megalanes in Subang Jaya yesterday.

But the Tour's first-ever qualifier from Brunei, who beat Malaysian men's hopeful Pang Boon Say 192-180 in the first round, lost to Tom Hahl of Singapore 189-164.

But the Malaysian bowlers suffered a loss of form in front of their home crowd as the Taiwanese made them pay. All the four local hopefuls in the men's pool crashed out of contention with sub-200 scores in the first round, and two of them fell to Taiwanese spinners.

Earlier, former international Azidi Ameran, who was the best Malaysian finisher at 10th spot in the just-concluded Malaysian International Open, was shown the exit door by Wu Siu-hong of Hong Kong when he lost 160-176.

Then national bowlers Lai Chuen Lian was outscored by the reigning Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam champion Wang Yu-jen of Taiwan with 176-203 while Jackson Ting lost 182-224 to Taiwan's Hsieh Yu-ping.

In the women's section, the 1998 Grand Slam champion Sarah Yap was the only Malaysian who advanced into the last eight before bowing out to the tournament's top seed and the Malaysian International Open champion Cecilia Yap of the Philippines 192-143.

Earlier, Sarah upstaged former champion and compatriot Low Poh Lian 190-176 in the opening round but Malaysia's top bowler Shalin Zulkifli had her jinx in the Tour continued when she was defeated by Taiwan's Huang Chiung-yao 172-169.

After four years of the Tour, this was the first time that Malaysia failed to make it to the semifinals.

Last year, Malaysia conquered the men's competition when all four of their bowlers including the eventual champion Ng Yiew Hup, Kenny Ang, Mustafa Yassin and Ben Heng made it into the last four.
