Letter - Stay in M-League

There is no reason why we have to pull out of the M-League. It is the only way to expose our local players since it is one of the prestigious tournaments in our region.

Many people seem to be saying that we have to pull out of the tournament and have our own league.

As we see there is currently the Pepsi Cup tournament being organised by the Brunei Muara Football Association and it is quite good in terms of exposure related to the national standard. Young talent can be spotted and selected to the national squad.

But it does nothing in terms of profit. Therefore we have to stay in the M-League although we have not been treated fairly. Let this be a challenge to our football industry and sport development.

In fact if the national squad can overcome the unsatisfactory treatment, we may actually win something in terms of mental strength to overcome adversity.

We have better and skillful players but the problem is the mental strength is not so good because they are exposed to competitive football at an older age.

This situation is currently being resolved by Project Ikan Pusu and hopefully this project can develop some world class players in Brunei. Congratulations to the Ikan Pusu team.

Athletic - Junior Championship meet begins in Brunei

By K. Jafni H. Ali

The 9th Asian Junior Athletic Championships was declared open by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Dato Seri Paduka Dr Haji Awang Hussain in a colourful ceremony at the Indoor Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.

Among the distinguished guests at the ceremony was Shri Suresh Kalmadi, the President of the Asian Amateur Athletic Association (AAAA).

In his opening speech, Pehin Haji Awang Hussain said that the hosting of a championship of this magnitude is a big achievement for Brunei Darussalam and reflects the confidence, which the Asian Athletic Federation places on our Brunei Amateur Athletic Association in entrusting them with this mammoth task.

He further added that in this era of increasing social ills and the impending threat of drug related- diseases, HIV/AIDS and substance abuse on our youth convinces us more than ever of the invaluable role that sport can play in developing the capacities of our youth and to enable them to develop their full potential.

After the speech, the AAAA flag was hoisted followed by the oath-taking headed by Maqnun Wahab, Brunei's representative in the 100m and 200m events.

The march-past by athletes and cultural shows were the highlights of the opening ceremony.

The championship from July 19-22 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium will see 500 athletes from 35 Asian nations vying for honours in the 45 events competed.

M-League - Yellow card woes for Brunei

By Benny Ang

Despite having amassed 12 points with three impressive wins in a row, Brunei coach Mick Jones is facing a delicate situation with many of his players in possible suspension dilemmas.

Ten of his first-choice players are on a yellow card each and one more would mean a one-match suspension for the player concerned.

And with two away games in the space of four days coming up, the main threat facing Jones might very well come from within his own squad as opposed to what his Wasps will be facing on the field.

Brunei take on Kedah first this Friday and then travel to take on Melaka Telekom on Monday night.

With Brunei playing so well at the moment, it would be a cruel blow to Jones to see half his team unavailable with yellow cards but yet that is a potential scenario that could well arise.

"Ten of the players are on yellow cards and there is a possibility that we could lose five players for the next game. It is the last thing we need going into what could very well be a key period for us," said Jones.

The situation explains Jones' substitution tactics on Monday night when he took off both Azmanuddin Gillen and Riwandi Wahit with Brunei leading comfortably 3-0.

Both players are on yellow cards and another one on Monday night against the Armed Forces would have ruled them out this Friday.

With this in mind, the Brunei coach hauled both players off to save them from potentially collecting that dreaded second yellow card.

The yellow card situation aside, Jones could hardly be happier with what he is seeing from his players at the moment, claiming that his players have hit good form at precisely the right moment.

"The performance on Monday night was possibly the best I have seen from the team all season long. I couldn't single out any position which I thought was our weak link. The overall structure was good and the players have adapted well to what I asked of them.

"Three weeks ago we had a meeting where I made it very clear to the players that I want to win every point that is available. I think we are good enough to go anywhere and win, playing good attacking football every time.

"Ironically, we haven't conceded a goal in three games now despite pushing forward more but that comes with confidence and the defenders looked confident on Monday night," added Jones.

Jones singled out right winger Fadlin Galawat and the two front strikers, Riwandi Wahit and Ak Shahrom Pg Hj Ismail for their excellent performances.

"I'm not that surprised by how Fadlin played, to be honest. It's what I've come to expect of him and I think every Brunei fan has also come to expect that of him.

"He has shown that he is in a different class on that right side and Monday's performance goes toward reinforcing that. Together with Irwan, I think they will give any defence fits."

"Riwandi and Ak Shahrom were excellent also. I asked a lot of them against the Army and they responded well. They worked hard and their pace was really causing the defence a lot of problems."

With the players in such fine form, it is not beyond them to get six points from their two matches but Jones is also right to be concerned about the yellow card situation.

M-League - Kelantan JKR do Brunei and Sabah a favour

By Catherine Ong

KOTA KINABALU - Kelantan JKR did Sabah and Brunei a big favour when they beat Premier Two league leaders Johor FC 2-0 at the Sultan Mohamad Stadium in Kota Baharu on Monday night.

JKR scored through Badrishan Abdul Kadir (14th min) and Che Hishamuddin Hassan (87th min). The match was physical, forcing referee M. Elangovan to flash six yellow cards, four to the home team and the rest, to Johor FC.

Sabah are in second spot with 29 points, one short of the leaders, but they also have a point in hand.

Meanwhile, Kelantan TNB beat NS Chempaka 2-1 in a Premier Two match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi.

The visitors went ahead as early as in the 5th minute when Hamdi Ibrahim nodded home a corner kick. However Chempaka's R.Sekar equalised, also through a header, in the 36th minute.

Kelantan TNB went into high gear in the second half and bagged the winner through Zainuddin Ariffin in the 51st minute.

Kuala Lumpur Malay Mail (KLMM) beat Melaka Telekom 3-1 at the KL Football Stadium in Cheras. KLMM had a first look at the visitors goal mouth as early as in the 6th minute but Hasnul Ramlan Khairuddin's freekick went inches over the bar.

However in the 13th minute, speedy R.Surendren put the home team in front when he scored from a rebound after Melaka Telekom's keeper Azhar Ahmad failed to catch a powerful shot by T.Sathasivapillai from outside the penalty box.

KLMM extended their lead in the second half when S.Sunder scored in the 78th minute. Four minutes later Melaka Telekom's skipper Rosli Hasyim reduced the deficit.

However KLMM's U.Suresh scored in the dying seconds through a spot kick after Telekom's Md Zakir Othman was red carded for punching M.Vishnu. That was enough to ensure full points for the city side.

In Alor Setar, former two-time Malaysia Cup champions Kedah lost to club side Kedah JKR 3-1 at the Darulaman Stadium.

Jorgen E.Larsen's boys were clearly outplayed by their less illustrious opponents and succumbed easily.

JKR moved fluidly and scored at will in the first half with goals through Rosli Azizan (10th min), Fariz Yahya (16th min) and Kamal Idris Ali (26th min).

The state team replied in the 37th minute through Tan Cheng Hoe but that was all they could muster. In the first round, Kedah demolished Kedah JKR 4-1 at the same venue.

Meanwhile, the junior Rhinos were shown an early exit in the President's Cup league competition after they merely managed to settle for a two-all draw against Kelantan in a group A tie at the Prisons field in Pengkalan Chepa on Sunday.

In the match that the junior Rhinos must win to keep their slim hope alive saw Kelantan netted the opener as early as in the ninth minute, but Gilbert Junior leveled the score with his 28th min goal. After the interval, Sabah doubled their effort and they were rewarded on the 63rd when Rosdin Wasli put the junior Rhinos ahead.

Football - Red Devil Veron to debut in KL

By Brian Martin

PETALING JAYA: Argentine midfield maverick Juan Sebastion Veron will make his debut as a Red Devil in Malaysia this Sunday.

Manchester United's group marketing director Peter Draper told The Star that Veron, who at £28.1mil (RM149 mil) is the fifth most expensive footballer in history, had secured the necessary papers for him to be registered as a United player for the coming season.

"We have rushed through his work permit and Veron will wear the United jersey for the first time in Malaysia," he added.

Veron, who moved to Old Trafford from Italian Serie A side Lazio, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, another of United's big money signing from PSV Eindhoven, are part of the most expensive team assembled in United's history. English tabloid, The Daily Mail, estimates the value of the squad at £200mil (RM1.06bil).

Julian Kam, the CEO of Proevents Overseas Ltd (the organiser of United's Asian Tour), said news of Veron's eligibility was the icing on the cake for Malaysian fans.

"Malaysians will now be the first to see United's new-look lineup. I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson (United's manager) for bringing his very best team to Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Manchester United will play against a Malaysian Selection for The Star Challenge Cup at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on July 22.

Veron, 26, believes that Manchester United has a great chance of winning the European Champions League this season--a feat that would cap Ferguson's final season as boss of the Red Devils.

M-League - Brunei beat Armed Forces 3-0

By Benny Ang

Brunei continued their almost inevitable march towards promotion when they won their third consecutive match last night beating the Armed Forces 3-0 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

While the soldiers were a physically bigger outfit than the Wasps, Brunei used their superior skill and speed to great effect with once again the right wing tandem of Irwan Mohammad and Fadlin Galawat causing great disharmony among the Malaysian ranks.

Fadlin, in particular, seemed to have the measure of his marker and on more than one occasion was able to embarrass him with just a quick flick or a sudden change or speed. His seemingly telepathic understanding with Irwan has resulted in the majority of Brunei's threats coming in from the right and it was precisely this avenue from which Brunei took the lead.

With the right wing proving so instrumental in Brunei's promotion race, it has meant that Subhi Abdillah Bakir has been able to work his way into the box unnoticed at times but his credentials as Brunei's leading goal scorer with five goals so far are being taken very seriously indeed.

So when Irwan fired in another of his menacing crosses from the right in the 31st minute, it came as no surprise that it was Subhi on the end of it once again, coolly firing into the top corner of the net under pressure from his marker.

Up to that point, despite some bright passages of play from the Wasps early on, the game had been lulled into a somewhat comatose state with the soldiers content to stifle the home side with their burly and rugged style of play.

To their credit, the Bruneian players, in particular the defensive unit, matched their opponents pound for pound in their desire and determination to win the ball.

Goalkeeper Wardun Yussof, in his third match for the Wasps, was looking calm and assured in the Brunei goal and his emergence as a starting goalkeeper has been a massive positive for Mick Jones.

At the other end, the pace of Ak Shahrom and Riwandi Wahit was causing the Army a few problems especially in the 10th minute when Riwandi beat the Army keeper Abd Rahman Aba to the ball only to be forced too wide to have a shot on goal.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Brunei didn't take long to add to their lead. With Fadlin leading the charge on a classic counter-attack, the Brunei right-winger picked out Riwandi with a precise cross-field pass.

Riwandi was then hauled down by Md Zin Roslan as he shaped up to shoot and from the resulting free-kick, skipper Ak Sallehuddin made it 2-0 with one of his trademark efforts.

Sallehuddin is fast making a name for himself in this free-kick department but last night's effort was a real gem as he curled it above the wall and into the net just out of the reach of Rahman Aba in the Army goal.

That goal came in the 54th minute and with the opposition reeling, Fadlin took it upon himself to pour further misery on the soldiers just four minutes later, Riwandi the beneficiary of another of Fadlin's delightful right-wing contributions.

Having beaten his marker for pace yet again, Fadlin looked up once and delivered an accurate cross in Riwandi's direction. There was still work to be done but Riwandi was clinical with his finishing, heading beyond the despairing Army keeper.

With the scoreline now a comfortable 3-0 lead in favour of the Wasps, the goal would prove to be Riwandi's final contribution to the game as Jones then substituted both his strikers and brought on Abang Norsillmy Abang Hj Taha and Affindi Yati Tuah in the 63rd minute.

Abang's main contribution was to hit the woodwork in injury time but by that point, the game was already a foregone conclusion with Brunei notching up a valuable three points to aid their cause.
